Inbound link checker for editors who score every post
Contentwise reads link data the way an editor reads a spreadsheet of posts: who links to this page, how strong are they, and is the page worth another week of work. Our own index covers 181,132,097 domains.
- Free DR lookup, no key and no card
- Score a whole URL list with one bulk call
- Written for content audits, not for link buyers

Who it is for
An inbound link checker is the missing column in your audit sheet
Most content audits carry traffic, word count and a last-updated date. They skip the one column that explains why an old post still holds its place. That column is inbound links.
A post that ten independent domains point at is a different asset from a post nobody has ever cited, even when both pulled the same clicks last quarter. An inbound link checker lets you see the difference before you touch a single paragraph, and it keeps the pruning meeting short.
We built Contentwise for the person who owns that sheet. You paste a domain, read the rating, then pull referring domains and anchors for the pages you are about to decide on. Nothing here sells a link. The field reference lists every column.
What it is for
What the scorecard reads for each page
Four signals sit in the sheet next to traffic. Each one maps to a call an editor already has to make.
Referring domains
The count of separate sites that link to the page. Ten links from one site are one vote, and the sheet should say so.
Domain Rating of the linkers
Our own 0 to 100 score, log scaled from referring domains. It sorts a news site from a forgotten directory in seconds.
Anchor text
The words people used when they linked. If the anchors say something your rewrite will delete, you want to know first.
Top pages of your domain
A ranked list of which URLs on your site collect links. Often it is three posts nobody has refreshed since 2022.
How it works
A Tuesday audit in four moves
- 1
Export the URL list
Take every post from your CMS or sitemap, with its sessions from Search Console for the last 90 days.
- 2
Look up the domain for free
The overview call needs no key. It tells you the rating and referring-domain count of the whole site before you spend a credit.
- 3
Pull the link columns
Use the top pages call to see which URLs collect links, then referring domains for the ones in doubt. Two credits per call.
- 4
Assign a verdict
Refresh, merge, redirect, leave alone or prune. The decision tree gives you the order of questions, and the severity table puts the result on a calendar.
Our position
Links decide the order of work, not the work itself
Link data cannot tell you whether a post is good. It can tell you which weak posts carry more weight than they look like they do, and that is the cheap half of an audit.
- Useful for ranking a refresh queue and for protecting pages with real citations
- Weak for judging quality, intent match or freshness of facts
- Not a rank tracker: for keyword positions use Ahrefs or Semrush

Compare
Starting bands for the refresh queue
| Referring domains | Sessions, 90 days | Usual call |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 2 | Falling or flat | Prune or merge into a stronger post |
| 0 to 2 | Rising | Leave alone, add internal links |
| 3 to 15 | Falling | Refresh, keep the URL and the anchors |
| 16 or more | Any | Protect: refresh only, never delete or move |
FAQ
Questions editors type before an audit
- What is an inbound link checker and what does it tell an editor?
- It lists the other sites that link to a page or domain. For an editor it answers one question: does this post carry citations that a rewrite or a deletion could waste? We show counts, ratings and anchors from our own index.
- How do I check inbound links for free?
- Type a domain into the box at the top of this page. The domain, overview, stats and suggest actions are free and need no key. Per-page link lists and bulk jobs cost credits, and new accounts start with $100.
- How fresh is the link data?
- The index refreshes roughly once a month, so a link won last week may not show yet. For audits that is fine. Do not use it to confirm that a placement went live today.
- Can I score hundreds of URLs at once?
- Yes, for domains. The bulk_dr action takes up to 2,000 domains per call and costs one credit. Paste the linking domains of your top posts and read the ratings in one response.
- Is the Domain Rating the same as Ahrefs DR?
- No. It is our own score, round(100 times log(ref_domains+1) divided by log(20 million)). It is similar in spirit to Ahrefs DR or Moz DA, so compare sites within one tool, never across tools.
- Does a post with zero backlinks need to be deleted?
- Not by itself. Zero links plus falling traffic plus no unique angle points to a merge or a prune. Zero links with steady traffic is a post earning on its own, so leave it and add internal links.
- Will this replace Ahrefs or Semrush for my team?
- No. They are fuller products for keywords, rank tracking and daily crawls. Contentwise covers link data at a low per-call price, which is the part a refresh sheet needs.
